Guide to: Scent Layering

There’s no smell like home.

We believe fragrance is an essential part of your home design; the finishing touch that defines and personalizes your space. Each person has a different biochemistry, scent memories, and smell associations that determine how they react to different scents—making fragrance a unique experience for each of us. What someone else loves might not smell great to you, and vice versa. That’s why choosing fragrance for your home is so personal.

Home fragrance is the perfect way to set the mood in any room and elevate your daily routines. It can (and should) be used for both function and beauty. Learn how to create a truly unique home scent with our scent layering guide.

How to Layer Scents:

Start with a foundation. The perfect way to build a consistent base is with a reed diffuser that provides an all-around, constant fragrance. We recommend placing a reed diffuser in all the high occupancy spaces of your home. Our tried and true picks are: fresh scents for the bathroom or laundry room (try Peppermint and Eucalyptus or Himalayan Bamboo), woody and spiced scents for the living room or office (Saffron Cedarwood), amber scents for the bedroom (Oakmoss and Amber is just dreamy), and gourmand or citrus scents for the kitchen (Sweet Paloma).

Next, add candles. Light candles to build upon that fragrance base. Candle create the perfect ambiance—our standard 8 oz candles burn for 45+ hours, and our 14 oz candles burn for 80+ hours. This is where you can really get into personalizing the scent of your home because there are so many options to mix and match! It’s truly a unique-to-you creation because it’s all about figuring out which scent combinations you love.

Light up some incense. Expecting company or want to diminish strong smells? We recommend opening a couple of windows to create airflow before lighting your incense. Incense cones burn for about 25 minutes, and incense sticks burn for about one hour, and both leave fragrance that lingers.

Keep it fresh. Our newest offering is perfect for your fragrance convenience. We love having Room Spray on hand to spritz on your couch, throw pillows, sheets, blankets, cushions, curtains, and even your car interior. It's also great in the bathroom to keep it smelling fresh. Room Spray is perfect as a final touch to your cleaning routine, and works best when sprayed onto fabrics for a quick fragrance pick-me-up.
